NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A drug approved to prevent seizures may also help obese people lose a few pounds when it's added to therapy and nutritional guidance, a new small trial suggests. But people who took zonisamide also reported more side effects, from nausea and vomiting to anxiety and depression. And two researchers not involved in the study questioned how much the drug would actually help people in the real world. Although zonisamide is only approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for seizures, doctors can prescribe it "off-label" for non-approved purposes. ...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Motivational counseling can slow down pregnancy weight gain in obese women and may take the edge off their anxiety, too, according to a new study from Belgium. It's recommended that obese women gain no more than 11 to 20 pounds during pregnancy to avoid health complications in both baby and mother. By the end of their pregnancies, women who got counseling had added about 23 pounds to their weight, compared to nearly 30 among women getting standard care. European regulators reject Vivus obesity drug

(Reuters) - Vivus Inc said European regulators recommended that its obesity pill not be approved, citing potential safety concerns related to the long-term use of the drug. The European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) raised concerns over heart risks and birth defects and the drug Qsiva's use by patients for whom it was not indicated. Vivus, which announced in late September that it was expecting a negative response, said it intends to appeal the panel opinion and request a re-examination of the decision by the CHMP. ...

(Reuters) - Orexigen Inc said the U.S. health regulator indicated it would be willing to discuss a faster resubmission of the company's application to market its weight loss pill Contrave. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January 2011 decided against approving Contrave, citing possible heart problems, and requested an additional trial to establish safety. Orexigen said on Monday it plans to explore with the FDA the possibility of resubmitting the application in advance of the interim data from its additional study. ...
